Galette des Rois (King’s Cake).

Have a new year celebration in my friends place. A simple dinner with roasted honey chicken with potato but is pretty much enough to fill our stomach.    Attended few French's host invitation, personally feel their way is different with Chinese. Chinese we can spend whole day to prepare the food in fried, steam, and always like to have many varieties on table. The one who cooked the foods properly exhausted and can't enjoy the moment when together. For French, they prepare simple and nice food and the host still can enjoy the wine, starter and chit chat with.

What special today is the dessert of Louise prepared - French Epiphany Pastry - Galette des Rois.too difficult to pronounce, so we called it "January cake".Why January ? Because in France tradition, this dessert only appear and cook in January and you can eat as many as you want in January, after that, you can't find it anymore

Before serve the cake, Louise asked who is the youngest among us. Glad to be the youngest for this Time.hehe!!! When she cut the cake I have to covered my eye and after she cut, I need to call the slice of cake belonging to who. After done, she said that is a gift inside the cake, so we to see who is the one to get it. Sound special. After this, I do a research on this tradition.

From the wed site,The Galette des Rois is not just about having a cup of tea and something sweet. There’s an age-old protocol that needs to be followed and it's all to do with the little charm that bakers hide inside the cake.First of all the youngest child has to hide under the table and tell whoever is cutting the cake who should get which piece.Whoever finds the charm, known as a “féve”, in their slice (as long as they don’t swallow it) names their king or their queen, who gets to wear the crown and theoretically boss the rest of the family around all day.And then everyone just sits down and scoffs it. Normally with either cider or champagne.
